More than 610,000 people across Australia are now experiencing positive changes, thanks to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The latest Quarterly Report highlights the progress made by participants, their families, caregivers, and disability networks since the scheme's start.
The report reveals significant advancements, going beyond numbers to showcase real-life transformations. Participants have more choices and control, increased engagement in their communities and workplaces, better social connections, and the freedom to use their preferred time.
Looking at the report's findings:
EmpowermentBoost: A remarkable 77% of participants over 15 years noted that the NDIS has helped them make decisions and control their lives better – a significant 15% increase.
Stronger Community Ties: Among those over 15 years old, an impressive 42% reported being more active in social and community activities – a notable increase of 20%.
MoreJobs: Employment participation has doubled from 11% to an inspiring 22% for participants aged 15 to 24, displaying how the NDIS positively affects their professional lives.
Faster Medical Transitions: The report highlights a commendable achievement in the time it takes for a participant to be discharged after being medically ready. The average in the June 2023 quarter was just 27 days (about 4 weeks), significantly shorter than the previous year.
Rebecca Falkingham, CEO of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), recognised the NDIS's positive impact on Australians with disabilities. She stressed the importance of listening to those directly affected by disabilities and the NDIS to drive improvements.
As the NDIS enters its next phase, the Agency is working with participants and the disability sector to design initiatives that refine the scheme. Falkingham highlighted the collaboration with the First Peoples Disability Network to create a First Nations strategy and action plan reflecting the aspirations of First Nations people with disability.
With 9.9% of new participants identifying as First Nations people, this approach promotes inclusivity and self-advocacy. Falkingham emphasised the goal of delivering a globally leading and sustainable scheme that aligns with the disability community's vision.
Underscoring the impact of the correct disability support, the data solidifies the NDIS's role in positively changing participants' lives, helping families and caregivers alike.
